Donald Trump as Mr. Clean

Some men have golden parachutes, others golden earrings. No matter how you parse it, Trump’s coronavirus pressers are an absolute shower.

This parody pic notwithstanding (and as Stormy Daniels can attest), Donald Trump should not be taken internally. Still, when a problem comes along, you must Reckitt. (Reckitt is the manufacturer of Lysol, which has had to issue warnings to the public not to put their household cleaning products to any exotic, clinically untested uses.)

The Trump PR shop has been slow to quash this corona-disaster du jour, suggesting they might benefit from these words of wisdom from the bards of the 80s generation:

When a problem comes along,
You must whip it;
Before the cream sets out too long,
You must whip it;
When something’s going wrong,
You must whip it.

Now whip it!
Into shape!
Shape it up!
Get straight!
Go forward!
Move ahead!
Try to detect it!
It’s not too late,
To whip it,
Whip it good!

When a good time turns around,
You must whip it;
You will never live it down,
Unless you whip it;
No one gets away,
Until they whip it.

Now whip it!
Into shape!
Shape it up!
Get straight!
Go forward!
Move ahead!
Try to detect it!
It’s not too late,
To whip it
Into shape.

– Devo, from the song “Whip It” by Gerald Casale and Mark Mothersbaugh, allegedly inspired by the poems found in Thomas Pynchon’s Gravity’s Rainbow.

Once Trump leaves office, there’ll be plenty left to whip. I suspect congressional committees will be doing some investigating. Sunlight is, after all, the best disinfectant, and the American people will be seriously jonesing for an injection of truth.

Still, you have to ask yourself: On a day when the national death toll from COVID-19 has passed 50,000, would the president rather we talk about disinfectants? I suppose some men are born to disinfectants, while others have disinfectants thrust upon them.
